text:
What is the most important information I should know about Verapamil (Calan)? Do not stop taking this medication without first talking to your doctor. If you stop taking the medication, your condition could become worse. Do not crush, chew, or break extended-release forms of Verapamil (Isoptin) such as generic Covera-HS and Verelan PM. Swallow them whole. Generic Verapamil SR, Isoptin SR, and Calan SR may be divided in half but should not be crushed or chewed.
What are Verapamil (Calan) tablets? Verapamil (Calan®, Isoptin®) is a calcium-channel blocker. By relaxing blood vessels, it can improve blood flow to the heart. Verapamil reduces attacks of chest pain (angina); lowers blood pressure (treats hypertension); and controls heart rate in certain conditions. Generic Verapamil (Isoptin) tablets are available.
How can this medicine affect other medicines? The blood levels of alcohol may be increased by this medicine. This can increase the effects of alcohol and cause blood pressure to drop. Verapamil (Calan) increases the effect of medicines used to lower blood pressure. When first taken with other blood pressure lowering medication it may cause a large drop in blood pressure and therefore dizziness. Verapamil (Isoptin) may increase the risk of the heart slowing and heart block. The risk of heart failure and severe drop in blood pressure is increased if Verapamil is taken with beta-blockers. Rifampicin increases the removal of Verapamil (Calan) from the body, making it less effective. Phenobarbital and phenytoin reduce the blood levels of Verapamil (Isoptin). Verapamil significantly increases the blood levels of digoxin to harmful levels. The dose of digoxin must be reduced if these two medicines are used together. Verapamil (Calan) increases the blood levels and therefore the effects of cyclosporin, carbamazepine, theophylline and quinidine.
Overdosage Any medication taken in excess can have serious consequences. If you suspect an overdose, seek medical attention immediately. An overdose of Calan can cause fluid buildup in the lungs, kidney problems, seizures, dangerously low blood pressure, and life-threatening heart problems such as a slow or irregular heartbeat. After treatment for an overdose, you should remain under observation in the hospital for at least 48 hours, especially if you have taken the sustained-release form of the drug.
