What is ticlopidine? Ticlopidine prevents substances in the blood, called platelets, from clustering. This helps to prevent blood clots from forming. Ticlopidine is used to prevent strokes in patients who have had a stroke or who have experienced transient ischemic attacks (TIAs or "mini-strokes"). Although not approved by the FDA for these purposes, ticlopidine has also been used to reduce the rate of reocclusion of arteries following angioplasty or stent placement, and to reduce the chance of a heart attack in some patients with coronary artery disease. Ticlopidine may also be used for purposes other than those listed in this medication guide.

What other drugs will affect ticlopidine? Do not take ticlopidine without first talking to your doctor if you are taking any of the following medicines: - a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication such as sulindac (Clinoril), piroxicam (Feldene), oxaprozin (Daypro), nabumetone (Relafen), flurbiprofen (Ansaid), fenoprofen (Nalfon), etodolac (Lodine), diflunisal (Dolobid), Voltaren), diclofenac (Cataflam, indomethacin (Indocin), Oruvail), Orudis, ketoprofen (Orudis KT, Aleve), Naprosyn, naproxen (Anaprox, others), Nuprin, Motrin, ibuprofen (Advil, or tolmetin (Tolectin).
- dipyridamole (Persantine); or
- clopidogrel (Plavix);
- heparin, danaparoid (Orgaran), dalteparin (Fragmin), ardeparin (Normiflo), or enoxaparin (Lovenox);
- warfarin (Coumadin);
- aspirin;
The medicines listed above can cause bleeding, especially when taken with ticlopidine. This interaction could become dangerous. Before taking ticlopidine, tell your doctor if you are taking - phenytoin (Dilantin).
- theophylline (Theo-Dur, Theochron, Theolair, others); or
- digoxin (Lanoxin, Lanoxicaps);

What should I watch for while taking ticlopidine? Visit your prescriber or health care professional for regular checks on your progress. Side effects to ticlopidine occur most frequently during the first 3 months of therapy. To make sure you do not develop any problems your health care provider will arrange for you to have blood tests before you start ticlopidine and then every 2 weeks for the first 3 months. It is essential that you keep your appointments for the blood tests. Do not stop taking ticlopidine without your prescriber's advice. If your prescriber decides to stop ticlopidine within the first 3 months, you will still need to have you blood tested for an additional 2 weeks after you have stopped taking ticlopidine.
Ticlopidine can cause serious blood problems. This can mean risk of infection or bleeding. Avoid activities that increase your risk of bleeding. Tell your prescriber or health care professional at once if have any unusual bleeding or bruise easily or an infection that will not get better.
Problems can arise if you need dental work, and in the day to day care of your teeth. Try to avoid damage to your teeth and gums when you brush or floss your teeth. Inform your dentist you are taking ticlopidine prior to any appointment or procedure.
Ask your prescriber or health care professional before you take non-prescription pain relievers. Do not take aspirin, aspirin-containing products, or antiinflammatory drugs such as ketoprofen, ibuprofen, naproxen unless directed to do so by your prescriber or health care professional.
If you are going to have surgery, tell your prescriber or health care professional that you are taking ticlopidine.
If OVERDOSE is suspected: Call 1-800-222-1222 to the American Association of Poison Control Centers, your local poison control center ( http://www.aapcc.org/findyour.htm ), or emergency room immediately. Proper storage of Ticlid (Ticlopidine) : Store Ticlid at room temperature, between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C). Store away from heat, moisture, and light. Do not store in the bathroom.
