| Levothroid, Synthroid Description |
brand names: Levoxyl, Levoxine, Synthroid, Levothroid, Unithroid
generic names: Levothyroxine, Levothyroxine sodium
Levothyroxine is used for: Treating low thyroid activity and treating or suppressing different types of goiters. It is also used with surgery and other medicines for managing certain types of thyroid cancer. Levothyroxine is a thyroid hormone. Thyroid hormones are produced and released by the thyroid gland and regulate the body's metabolism. When the thyroid gland is underactive (hypothyroidism) it does not produce enough thyroid hormone and metabolism slows.
How does it work? Eltroxin tablets contain the active ingredient Levothyroxine sodium (previously known simply as thyroxine sodium in the UK). (NB. Levothyroxine (Levothroid) is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine .) Levothyroxine is the same as the hormone thyroxine, which is produced naturally by the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces and releases two thyroid hormones: thyroxine (T4) and tri-iodothyronine (T3). Tri-iodothyronine is the more active thyroid hormone, and thyroxine is converted into T3 in various parts of the body. These hormones are responsible for maintaining a normal rate of metabolism in the body. When the thyroid gland is unable to produce normal amounts of thyroxine, the level of both thyroid hormones in the blood decreases (hypothyroidism). This results in a reduced rate of metabolism, leading to symptoms such as weight gain, intolerance to cold and tiredness. Levothyroxine (Synthroid) tablets are given to replace the thyroxine that would normally be produced naturally by the thyroid gland. This returns levels of T3 and T4 to normal. Once the thyroid gland becomes unable to produce thyroxine, it will generally not return to normal function. This means that once thyroxine replacement is started, it usually needs to be taken for the rest of a persons life. The daily dose should preferably be taken before breakfast.
What drug(s) may interact with Levothyroxine (Levothroid)? amiodarone antacids calcium supplements, nutritional supplements, including non-prescription medicines, including contraceptive or birth control pills ketamine medicines for colds and breathing difficulties medicines for diabetes medicines for mental depression medicines or herbals used to decrease weight or appetite phenobarbital or other barbiturate medications phenytoin prednisone or other corticosteroids rifabutin rifampin soy isoflavones sucralfate theophylline warfarin

Overdosage An overdose of Synthroid can produce the same symptoms of overstimulation listed under "What side effects may occur?" Confusion and disorientation are also possible, and there have been reports of stroke, shock, coma, and death. If you suspect a massive overdose, seek emergency medical attention immediately.
Recommended dosage Your doctor will tailor the dosage to meet your individual requirements, taking into consideration the status of your thyroid gland and other medical conditions you may have. Older adults often require somewhat smaller doses. To make sure the dosage is right for you, the doctor will monitor your thyroid hormone level with periodic blood tests.
