| Vermox Description |
brand name: Vermox
generic names: Albendazole, Mebendazole
What are mebendazole tablets? MEBENDAZOLE (Vermox ® ) is an anthelmintic. This medicine treats parasitic (worm) infections from roundworms, hookworms, pinworms, whipworms, or infections with two or more of these worms. Generic mebendazole tablets are available.
How does it work? Vermox (Mebendazole) tablets and suspension contain the active ingredient mebendazole, which is a type of medicine called an anthelmintic. It is used to treat certain types of worm infections of the gut. Mebendazole works by preventing worms from being able to absorb sugars that are essential for their survival. This depletes the energy stores of the worms, leading to their eventual death within a few days. The dead worms are then excreted from the gut in the stools. Mebendazole is used mainly in the treatment of threadworm, however is also used to treat infections of roundworm, whipworm and hookworm. A single dose is effective for treating threadworm infections, but a second dose may be needed after two weeks if the infection comes back. It is recommended that the whole family are treated. For treating roundworm, hookworm or whipworm infections, one dose is needed twice a day for three days.
What is the most important information I should know about albendazole? Do not use this medication if you are allergic to albendazole, or to similar medications such as mebendazole (Vermox (Mebendazole)). Before using albendazole, tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have liver disease or have ever had abnormal liver function tests. Do not use albendazole if you are pregnant or planning to become pregnant during treatment. Use an effective form of birth control while you are using albendazole, and for at least 1 month after your treatment ends. Take albendazole with food to lessen stomach upset. Take this medication for the entire length of time prescribed by your doctor. Your symptoms may get better before the infection is completely treated. Albendazole will not treat a viral infection such as the common cold or flu. Albendazole is sometimes used as part of a combination treatment with steroids and medicine to prevent seizures. To best treat your condition, use all of your medications as directed by your doctor. Be sure to read the medication guide or patient instructions provided with each of your medications. Do not change your doses or medication schedule without advice from your doctor. Albendazole can lower the blood cells that help your body fight infections. This can make it easier for you to bleed from an injury or get sick from being around others who are ill. To be sure your blood cells do not get too low, your blood will need to be tested on a regular basis. Your liver function may also need to be tested. Do not miss any scheduled visits to your doctor.
Where can I keep my medicine? Keep out of the reach of children in a container that small children cannot open.
Store at room temperature between 15 and 30 degrees C (59 and 86 degrees F). Throw away any unused medicine after the expiration date.
How can this medicine affect other medicines? You should tell your doctor or pharmacist if you are already taking any medicines, including those bought without a prescription and herbal medicines, before you take this medicine. Similarly, check with your doctor or pharmacist before taking any new medicines in combination with this one, to ensure that the combination is safe . Cimetidine may decrease the breakdown of mebendazole by the liver and so increase the amount of mebendazole in the blood. The manufacturer recommends that the antibiotic metronidazole should not be used in combination with mebendazole.
