Why is Levofloxacin prescribed?

Levaquin cures a variety of bacterial infections, including several types of sinus infection and pneumonia. It is also prescribed for flare-ups of chronic bronchitis, acute kidney infections, certain urinary or chronic prostate infections, and skin infections. Levaquin is a member of the quinolone family of antibiotics.

Overdosage

Levaquin is not especially poisonous. However, an overdose could still be dangerous. If you suspect one, seek emergency treatment immediately.

• Symptoms of Levaquin overdose may include:
  Breathlessness, convulsions, tremors, poor coordination, lack of movement, collapse

Not to be used in

• History of tendon disorders caused by previous treatment with a quinolone-type antibiotic
  
  
• Allergy to other quinolone-type antibiotics , eg norfloxacin, ciprofloxacin

How to use Levofloxacin (Levaquin) :

Use Levofloxacin (Levaquin) as directed by your doctor. Check the label on the medicine for exact dosing instructions.

• Do not miss any doses of Levofloxacin (Levaquin) . If you miss a dose of Levofloxacin , use it as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. Do not use 2 doses at once.
• To clear up your infection completely, use Levofloxacin (Levaquin) for the full course of treatment. Keep using it even if you feel better in a few days.
• Levofloxacin (Levaquin) works best if it is used at the same time each day.
• Keep this product, as well as syringes and needles, out of the reach of children and pets. Do not reuse needles, syringes, or other materials. Ask your health care provider how to dispose of these materials after use. Follow all local rules for disposal.
• Do not use Levofloxacin (Levaquin) if it contains particles, is cloudy or discolored, or if the vial is cracked or damaged.
• Levofloxacin (Levaquin) is usually given as an injection at your doctor's office, hospital, or clinic. If you will be using Levofloxacin at home, a health care provider will teach you how to use it. Be sure you understand how to use Levofloxacin (Levaquin) . Follow the procedures you are taught when you use a dose. Contact your health care provider if you have any questions.
• Drinking extra fluids while you are taking Levofloxacin (Levaquin) is recommended. Check with your doctor for instructions.

Why should Levaquin not be prescribed?

If any other quinolone antibiotic--such as Cipro, Noroxin, Maxaquin, Floxin, or Penetrex--has ever given you an allergic reaction, avoid Levaquin.
