What should I discuss with my healthcare provider before taking Diltiazem (Cardizem)? Do not use this medication if you are allergic to Diltiazem, or if you have: - if you have recently had a heart attack.
- low blood pressure; or
- certain heart conditions, especially "sick sinus syndrome" or "AV block" (unless you have a pacemaker);
Before taking Diltiazem (Cardizem), tell your doctor if you are allergic to any drugs, or if you have: - congestive heart failure.
- liver disease; or
- kidney disease;
If you have any of these conditions, you may not be able to use Diltiazem (Cardizem), or you may need a dosage adjustment or special tests during treatment. FDA pregnancy category C. This medication may be harmful to an unborn baby. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment. Diltiazem (Cardizem) can pass into breast milk and may harm a nursing baby. Do not use this medication without telling your doctor if you are breast-feeding a baby.
How should I take this medicine? Take Diltiazem (Cardizem) tablets by mouth. Follow the directions on the prescription label. Swallow the tablets with a drink of water. Take Diltiazem tablets on an empty stomach, at least 1 hour before or 2 hours after food. Do not significantly increase grapefruit juice intake while taking this drug, or avoid grapefruit juice if possible. Take your doses at regular intervals. Do not take your medicine more often then directed. Do not stop taking except on your prescriber's advice.
Contact your pediatrician or health care professional regarding the use of this medicine in children. Special care may be needed.
Pregnancy and Breastfeeding Certain medicines should not be used during pregnancy or breastfeeding.
