Catapres is used for: Treating high blood pressure. It may be used alone or with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor. Catapres is an alpha agonist. It works by relaxing (dilating) blood vessels and decreasing heart rate, which lowers blood pressure.
What side effects may I notice from taking clonidine? Stopping taking clonidine can produce some of these side effects. Ask your prescriber or health care professional before you reduce your dose, or stop taking clonidine. Side effects that you should report to your prescriber or health care professional as soon as possible: anxiety, chest pain pain or difficulty passing urine stomach pain swelling of feet or legs trembling, nervousness dizziness or fainting spells increased sweating irregular heartbeat or palpitations, shakiness unusual tiredness or weakness

Special warnings about Catapres (Clonidine) Catapres (Clonidine) should not be stopped suddenly. Headache, confusion, tremor, agitation, nervousness, and rapid rise in blood pressure can occur. Severe reactions such as fluid in the lungs, stroke, disruption of brain functions, and death have also been reported. Your doctor should gradually reduce your dosage over several days to avoid withdrawal symptoms. If you see redness, blistering, or a rash near the transdermal patch, call your doctor.
