Tacrolimus is used for:

Preventing organ rejection in patients following liver, kidney, or heart transplant. It may be used along with other medicines. It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.

Tacrolimus is an immunosuppressant. It blocks the action of certain blood cells (eg, T lymphocytes) that can cause the body to reject the transplanted organ.

Tacrolimus (Prograf) side effects

• increased urination, thirst, or hunger.
• muscle weakness, tiredness, fast or pounding heartbeat, mild shortness of breath; or
• fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms;
• pale skin, easy bruising or bleeding, unusual weakness;
• tremor (shaking), headache, confusion, numbness or tingly feeling;
• problems with your vision, speech, or coordination;
• painful urination, blood in your urine;
• urinating less than usual or not at all;
• pain in the lower back or side;

Other, less serious side effects may also occur, such as:

• itching skin or mild rash.
• sleep problems (insomnia); or
• nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, loss of appetite;
• swelling in your hands or feet;

Side effects other than those listed here may also occur. Talk to your doctor about any side effect that seems unusual or that is especially bothersome.

Tacrolimus (Prograf) is available with a prescription under the brand name Prograf. Other brand or generic formulations may also be available. Ask your pharmacist any questions you have about this medication, especially if it is new to you.

What is Tacrolimus (Prograf)?

Tacrolimus (Prograf) lowers your body's immune system. The immune system helps your body fight infections. The immune system can also fight or "reject" a transplanted organ such as a liver or kidney. This is because the immune system treats the new organ as an invader.

Tacrolimus (Prograf) is used together with other medicines to prevent your body from rejecting a heart, liver, or kidney transplant.
